 Masterclass Amy Tidmarsch

Exploring Colour and Stripes

"Deze zomer verwelkomen we de Britse Amy Tidmarsh in ons atelier! Amy staat bekend om haar gedurfde kleurgebruik en ritmische composities. In deze eendaagse workshop (Engelstalig) neemt ze je mee in haar creatieve proces: van kleurstudies met papier tot de uiteindelijke constructie op de naaimachine."

Colour + Stripe: A Masterclass with Amy Tidmarsh

We are excited to welcome British modern patchworker Amy Tidmarsh to our atelier this summer. Known for her bold and intuitive approach to textiles, Amy will be exhibiting her work in our gallery during the renowned Open Stal Art Route. To coincide with her exhibition, she is offering an exclusive one-day masterclass on the interplay of colour, rhythm, and stripes.

About the masterclass

How do colours talk to each other? And how can a simple stripe change the entire energy of a quilt? In this dynamic one-day workshop, we dive deep into Amy’s signature process. We start by using paper and "found-colour" to quickly explore combinations and proportions, before translating these ideas into fabric and thread.

This masterclass is about the "criticality" of colour—understanding why certain combinations work—while keeping the making process playful and improvisational. By using the sewing machine as a tool for rhythm, you will learn how to build compositions that are both structured and full of life.

What to Expect

While we refer to classic colour theory, our approach is loose and flexible. We move from tactile paper collages to the sewing machine, investigating how stripes can function as a powerful format for exploration.

  • Paper to Fabric: Using paper-patchwork as a sketchpad to find your personal palette, then moving into textile construction.

  • The Power of the Stripe: Exploring balance, rhythm, and proportion by using stripes to create impact and movement.

  • Machine Work: Using your sewing machine to "draw" and assemble your colour studies into textile fragments.

  • Creative Dialogue: Engaging in discussions about how colour functions within a composition and how to trust your intuitive eye.

Who is this for?

This workshop is perfect for artists, designers, and quilters who want to push their creative boundaries. Whether you want to loosen up your patchwork style or explore new ways to use "found colour" in your work, Amy’s rhythmic methodology will offer fresh perspectives for any creative practice.

This masterclass is including most materials ( fabric and paper) but you will be asked to bring tools and sewing machine if possible and you can bring of course your own fabrics to use as well.

We serve a delicious vegetarian meal for lunch.

About Amy Tidmarsh

Amy Tidmarsh is a British artist and modern patchworker whose work is celebrated for its vibrant energy and graphic clarity. She studied a master in Textile Design at the Royal College of Art in London and a bachelor in Embroidery at Manchester Metropolitan University. Her work bridges the gap between traditional craft and contemporary art.

" I am a multidisciplinary textile designer, maker, and educator driven by an inventive approach to hand-based textile skill. By combining intuitive ways of working with an in-depth focus on practice-based research, I explore ideas centred around craft, process, and performative textiles. At the very heart of my practice is an interest in the interaction of colour and pattern, which I explore through textile-based thinking and making. My studio practice aims to approach colour and pattern through physical textile sampling in a playful and experimental way. I love to learn, engrossing myself in traditional processes such as patchwork and quilting, but finding new ways to interpret technique and material."
