“Inside-Outside”
Textile books and mixed media objects
Do you remember the fascination and magic of opening a book for the first time or looking into the inside of a deep vessel or object? Let’s play with this magical idea of inside-outside.
In this masterclass week we will explore surfaces, colour mood and combination of different materials. Our theme will be “Inside-outside”, it’s about making visible surfaces but also the “hidden” inside. We can use either leftovers from your former textile and mixedmedia experiments (stitched pieces, prints on paper or cloth, beloved pieces from your wardrobe that you don’t wear anymore, etc.). Further we are working with new ideas and fresh materials to produce stunning surface quality and telling stories around this material. In the workshop we will play with different structures such as a classical book form but also the idea of a tunnel book. We also go further to explore more abstract objects such as stitched vessels or multi-layered objects with a “looking inside or through” effect.
At the end you will have at least one book and a small object, but you’ll have an idea how to approach your own themes and telling stories through your own creative and artistic voice. Let’s have fun by exploring materials and its potential to tell stories.
For this workshop you don’t need special skills for techniques. If you want to bring your sewing machine, that’s fine.
All can be also done by hand stitching.
Material list will follow before the start of the course.
The masterclass starts at Monday at 10:00 in the morning and you will work daily until around 16:00 with Britta in our atelier. On Friday we end with a shared closing moment, reviewing the work created and reflecting on the week together.
We serve a vegetarian lunch everyday which is included in the course.
Artist statement Britta:
Textile art is poetry, storytelling, and combination
I love telling stories and asking questions.
Embarking on a journey of exploration with tactile materials, placing them in intriguing new contexts, and transforming the material into art—this is my way of engaging artistically.
Creating art happens primarily in my studio, working with textiles, paper, and occasionally in combination with other natural materials.
I favor "slow, rounded" processes. I often begin with raw materials, followed by dyeing, printing, painting wool and fabrics, spinning or weaving, sewing together, taking apart again (deconstruction), and reshaping. The subsequent embroidery serves as the integrating factor, bringing everything together: lines, surfaces, connections, and cohesion.
I’ve always been fascinated by mixed forms (mixed media). In relation to textile art, I explore how multiple textile techniques can be integrated into a single work without overpowering one another. It’s a kind of dialogue between traditions that have walked separate paths for centuries.
In my textile works, I strive to create new forms of "mixed tapestry" and "art quilts," which, in essence, represent themes of integration and communication. In doing so, I draw on both historical and contemporary contexts in my textile art.
My works closely resemble collages yet remain distinct.
