 Masterclass Amy Tidmarsch

Modern Patchwork, Exploring Colour, Stripes and Transparancy

"Deze zomer verwelkomen we de Britse Amy Tidmarsh in ons atelier! Amy staat bekend om haar gedurfde kleurgebruik en ritmische composities. In deze driedaagse workshop (Engelstalig) neemt ze je mee in haar creatieve proces: van kleurstudies met papier tot de uiteindelijke constructie op de naaimachine."

Join us for a three-day immersion into the vibrant world of British artist Amy Tidmarsh. In this masterclass, we move beyond traditional quilting into the realm of light, rhythm, and transparency. Inspired by the "colourful ecstasy" of Amy’s work—on display during this year's Open Stal—you will learn to build textile compositions that function like stained-glass: glowing, structured, and full of life.

About the masterclass

How do colours talk to each other? And how can a simple stripe change the entire energy of a quilt? In this dynamic one-day workshop, we dive deep into Amy’s signature process.

This masterclass is about the "criticality" of colour—understanding why certain combinations work—while keeping the making process playful and improvisational. By using the sewing machine as a tool for rhythm, you will learn how to build compositions that are both structured and full of life.

These three days are a journey through colour. We start with the basics of colour theory and "found-colour" and end with a stunning, translucent 'Vitrage' style window piece. While the full three-day experience offers the most depth, each day is designed to stand on its own, allowing you to join for the full journey or choose the specific focus that inspires you most.

The 3-Day Journey

Day 1: The Foundation – Colour + Stripe We begin by exploring your personal relationship with colour. Using both paper and fabric, we investigate how stripes and sequences can create rhythm and balance. You will create a series of experimental studies that serve as the "DNA" for your textile work.

Day 2: The Technique – Strip-piecing & Rhythm On the second day, we take the sewing machine to the heart of the process. We focus on the technique of strip-piecing. You will learn how to manipulate fabric strips to create complex, rhythmic patterns. It is a day of play, precision, and discovering the impact of repetition.

Day 3: The Masterpiece – Transparency & Light The final day is all about the "Vitrage" effect. We shift our focus to transparency. You will design and construct a final window piece where light becomes a part of the composition. By layering and piecing translucent fabrics, you will create a work that mimics the depth and glow of stained glass.

Who is this for?

Whether you are an experienced quilter looking for a modern, architectural approach, or an artist from another discipline wanting to explore transparency and light, this workshop offers new tools for your creative kit.

This masterclass is including most materials ( fabric and paper) but you will be asked to bring tools and sewing machine if possible and you can bring of course your own fabrics to use as well.

We serve a delicious vegetarian meal for lunch.

About Amy Tidmarsh

Amy Tidmarsh is a British artist and modern patchworker whose work is celebrated for its vibrant energy and graphic clarity. She studied a master in Textile Design at the Royal College of Art in London and a bachelor in Embroidery at Manchester Metropolitan University. Her work bridges the gap between traditional craft and contemporary art.

" I am a multidisciplinary textile designer, maker, and educator driven by an inventive approach to hand-based textile skill. By combining intuitive ways of working with an in-depth focus on practice-based research, I explore ideas centred around craft, process, and performative textiles. At the very heart of my practice is an interest in the interaction of colour and pattern, which I explore through textile-based thinking and making. My studio practice aims to approach colour and pattern through physical textile sampling in a playful and experimental way. I love to learn, engrossing myself in traditional processes such as patchwork and quilting, but finding new ways to interpret technique and material."
