Colourful Contrasts 5 day 23-24, [25 work in studio] 26-28 June 2019

Discover the surprises of colour mixes and surface contrasts at each stage of the felt making process. To develop individual approaches and working methods, creating ideas for one off textiles, interior or fashion items.

23-24 June: Introduction and Sampling

Exploring the proportion of colour in the mixing of wool and the juxtaposition of contrasting areas, both with art and felting materials.

An initial exercise will be explored through a group art work session, to highlight personal differences to heighten your awareness of the design process. The exercise will give you a wider understanding to explore the various methods of mixing the dyed wool tops by hand, carding or layering. Introducing unfamiliar colours to create various degrees of strong vibrancies or depths of grey.

Using these pre felts with the addition of a solid colour, such as needle felt, will produce the strong contrasts of surface. The proportion of colour can also be explored by collaging the textured paper with printed coloured papers.

These experiments are used to connect with each participant’s interests and previous work, to suggest future directions and how to continue developing over the next four days.

25th June: Free day. The studio will be available for working individually to simulate the new discoveries in your own thoughts and methods.

26-28 June: Development and Conclusions

Manipulating and reconstructing the pre felts, considering proportion and contrasts with the addition of fabric and threads can enhance the surface texture or change the structural qualities. Stitch on both pre felt and the final felted surface will create interesting small marks and texture.

Adding personal references with these samples for story boards/design sheets.

Utilizing various felting techniques, collage, stitch, manipulating, pattern making, etc, where appropriate for the individual. The experimental sampling may become a prototype, small item or a series of ideas for future projects, depending on what develops in the process.

Guidance and encouragement will be given throughout the workshop for you to share your concerns and aspirations, working method and future direction.
